Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 2

Day 2: It’s All in a Day’s Work

Activity 1: A House or a Home?

In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a wharepuni and your house?

Similarities: Both my house and the wharepuni have shelter. In the wharpuni you can do family meetings, its just like home! At my house we sometimes do family meetings when we have events coming up or when we need to sort out something.

Differences: In the wharepuni you cant make a mess inside, but throughout my house we do birthday partys and many other things to mess up our house.

Activity 2: The Rules of Engagement
During the early years in New Zealand, men and women would often marry at a young age. Women were expected to have babies and remain in the home caring for their children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men, on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home.

These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path in life. In fact, I was lucky enough to go to university and to follow my dream of becoming a teacher!

What is your dream job? Draw a picture of yourself doing your dream job and post it on your blog. You could be a doctor, an actor or even a zookeeper! I have drawn myself taking a picture of a beautiful castle in Poland because I would love to become a travel blogger and photographer one day.

Here is the link to my Dream Job

Bonus Activity: Special Meals

Back in the 1800s, most Māori ate a simple diet. They ate foods that they could catch in the water (eg. fish) or grow on the land (eg. kumara). They did not have access to a supermarket to buy food for their meals! Speaking of meals, what is your favourite meal? Mine is wood-fired pizza. Yum!

On your blog, post a picture of your favourite meal. Be sure to tell us what it is and why it is your favourite. You could also include the recipe if you have it so that we can all try it!

My favorite food is Jajangmyeon! Its noodles mixed with korean black paste. I love Jajangmyeon because its so yummy! Unfortunatly I have no recipe on how to make it.

  1. Hey there Chance, thanks for sharing your favourite food with us. This does look delicious. It sounds really interesting, I've actually never heard of it before. Is it spicy?

What would you say your favourite sweet food is?

    Thanks, Billy

    2. Yum Turkish Delight! I love most of the favourite chocolates. I really like black forest or dark chocolate though. I like heaps of junk food really, but I try not to eat it.

  2. Hi Chance, thanks for asking. My favourite sweet food is dark chocolate. I don't really like Turkish Delight, I usually leave them at the end of the Favourites box.

What do you think of black jellybeans?

    1. Hello Billy, Ugh! Black jellybeans are the worst! I usualy eat them last and eat the good ones I like first. Do you like black jellybeans? What is your favorite jellybean?

    2. Yeah I hate them too! I like any colour except black. Have you ever tried the crazy Harry Potter jelly beans?

      They're bizarre.

  3. Hi Chance!

My name is Ellee, I am another part of the Summer Learning Journey Crew that is commenting on your blogs this summer.

I just wanted to let you know that I requested access to see what your dream job is on your drive. (exciting!)

I was scrolling through your posts and I saw the photo of your favourite food and I had to check it out! It looks delicious....Do you go to a Korean restaurant to eat it?

I like the similarities and differences you found with your house and a wharepuni. I think my favourite thing about the wharepuni is the carvings, I wish we could have carvings on our houses now! Would you like that?

Keep up the awesome work on your blog chance, was really cool to see your beach pics!

    Ellee :)

    2. Hi Chance!

No problem this was a really great post!
I find it really hard to pick favourites...I just love food :)
Maybe mashed pototes and gravy....Mostly because it was my poppa's specialty so it has a place in my heart and stomach :)
      Sorry Chance, I don't have a blog.
I really like your choice of dream job! Being an actor sounds really fun, is there a type of movie you would like to do?
I think I would like to be in an action movie so I could learn some stunts!

Keep up the amazing work with your blog!

    1. Hi Chance!

      Great to hear from you!
OooOOooo good choice of genre! I think horror would be really fun to act in with all of the special effects. I would like to do the make-up on movies like that :)

Maybe thrillers are my favourite... (so hard to pick favourites!!) I like the movies that make you think or have really good plot twists! But I will watch pretty much anything.

Do you have a director you would like to work with? I think it would be pretty cool if you could be in Tika movie! I get a little bit proud whenever I see a kiwi making it big overseas so I think he's the best!
