Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 3

Day 3: It’s All in the Family

Activity 1: The More, the Merrier? victorian family.jpg
In the 1800s, most families were pretty big. In fact, many parents had an average of seven to nine children.  Imagine that you were a child in the 1800s and you had nine siblings.

On your blog, please tell us how you would feel. Would you enjoy being a member of such a large family? Why or why not?

I would love to have a big family because I dont have that much siblings that live with me. Plus if I were to be a only child I would have no brother or sister to play with.
Activity 2: Acknowledging Ancestry
All of us are members of a family. Some of us have large families and some of us have very small families. When I have the opportunity to talk about my family and my ancestry I sometimes choose to use a pepeha. It is a very special way of identifying who I am and where I come from. There are many different versions of pepeha but most provide people with information about who you are and where you come from (i.e. your whakapapa). Use the template provided below to prepare your own unique pepeha. If you need help please watch this short movie clip on preparing a pepeha.

Well i'm not going to do the same pepeha that Rachel did due to me not being Maori, So instead I did a pepeha that I normaly do at school.

E te mauri mai tāwhiti
E te whare, te papa, te kainga noho, tēnā koutou
Ki ngā anahera, kua rere hei taki, hei tuara mo te hunga ora, haere
Ki a tātou, he mihi nui
Ko Maungarei te maunga
Ko Te Wai o Taiki te awa
Ko Ukutoia te papa
Tēnā koutou
Ko George tōku pāpā, nō Rakahanga ia
Ko Charlene tōku māmā, nō Rarotonga ia
Ko Chance tōku ingoa
Ko Point England tōku kainga noho
Tekau ōku tau
Nōreira

E ngā tauira, kaiako, he mihi nui, he mihi aroha Anei he kōrero a te kura, “Whaiā kia eke”

Nōreira tēnā koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa

When you have completed your pepeha, post it on your blog. You could even post a video of you reading out your pepeha.

  1. Hi there Chance!

My name is Jade F and I am one of the blog commenters from the Summer Learning Journey team!

With your first activity, I thought your opinion on whether or not you would enjoy being a member of a large family was excellent. I agree with you about your comment on if you were an only child, you wouldn’t have any siblings to play with! If you were in a large family you would definitely have more people to have fun with. How many people are in your family? I have 5 people in my family. :)

Thank you for sharing your school pepeha, it’s amazing how you know it so well! Do you know it all off by heart? I had to create a pepeha when I was at university and I enjoyed sharing it to the class and telling them about my Maori ancestry.

In your bonus activity, I thought the facts you wrote about your family members was fantastic. They all sound like they all like do some fun activities during the summer! One of my favourite colours is purple too, like your Mum and cousin Riley! What are some activities that you like to do in the summer? Let me know in a comment! I like to spend time at the beach and going out for lunch with friends and family. :)

Looking forward to hearing from you Chance, keep up the awesome blog posts!

    All the best,
    Jade F :)
